Subject: Null Winsock??
I would like to run a WWW browser like Mosaic as a stand alone application.
Is there anyway I can full Mosaic into thinking that Winsock is running?
Someting like a null winsock perhaps?

I know of the neatest program that WILL do this for you, specifically designed
to keep track of time and costs while logged into a SLIP server :)
I cannot recall the site where it can be found, but email to this address -
webberd@nbnet.nb.ca as he's the fellow who created it.
Works wonderful with winsock and it can be added to the login and logoff
scripts.

YES!!! I know Trumpet source is not available (unless Peter Tattam has changed
his mind) but a Winsock, however incomplete, in source form would make me a
very happy little black duck...

I tried WSAT on a number of winsocks (IMHO, none of them work properly
except the one that comes with NT) and they all fail the tests in
strange ways! TRumpet was actually one of the best, but none were error-free
and none completed the client/server tests without hanging or crashing
the whole system. As someone who has to rely on winsock for a product,
I'm pretty depressed all round. I agree M$ is back-pedalling very hard
over WSAT and they probably wish they had never mentioned it.

Subject: Are you having trouble with Internet VoiceChat?
Hello everybody,
I have left school for the summer and thus have very limited net access.
After today I'll lose my usenet access and will only have email for the
rest of the summer. This message is to clear up some questions about my
Internet VoiceChat program which was recently released.
Several people have contacted me saying that IVC simply doesn't work with
their system. While I can *guarantee* you that it works perfectly on my
setup (Novell Lan Workplace for DOS), I can also explain why it won't work
on certain other stacks, especially Peter Tattam's Trumpet Winsock.
Basically the problem is that I am using a third-party custom control for
Visual Basic to handle all of the Winsock API calls. It turns out that
this control is not 100% compatible with all Winsock stacks. This is
quite frustrating for me because the bug is not in my code per se. The
author of the control has confirmed to me that it is not 100% compatible
with Trumpet Winsock.
I have decided to rewrite the entire thing over the summer using a new
control; this should fix up most of the problems.
In order to have had the first version of IVC released, I had to finish it
up in the last few days I was at school. Thus my ability to test it on a
variety of systems was severely limited; most of my testing was done
between my university and a student at MIT. Everything seemed fine, so
the program was released without mention of problems with Trumpet Winsock.
I would really like to see IVC compatible with all Winsock platforms, and
I'm doing all I can to get it that way. Certain posts I've read on
alt.winsock have been rather angry with me; please realize that I can't do
much now since I'm home for the summer. I will let everyone know when the
second version is released.

The problem is not so much the lack of 'experts', the problem is with
the multitude of different setups - everybody uses a different package,
with a different modem, some want SLIP, some want PPP, etc etc etc.
Nobody can help you unless you post a specific question, such as:
"I'm using package XXXX, and modem YYYY, and I am trying to connect to a
SLIP server at XXXX baud, and the following error message appears - what am
I doing wrong?".
This might get you an answer, but "What do I have to do to telnet from my
house?" probably won't - there are too many variables.
The correct answer is "bug your software providers to include decent
documentation". If you have registered and paid for shareware, you are
entitled to instructions on loading and configuring packet drivers if
the software requires a packet driver to work, and so forth. If you
haven't registered the software, you are already getting the support you
paid for. If you _have_ paid for the software, bug the author if the
documentation is skimpy.

Subject: John Junod and WS_GMAIL - How do I find them?
I have been searching for a winsock compatible mail program which receives
mail via smtp as well as sends mail that way. It sounds like ws_gmail does
that. I have attempted to locate it via ftp at the site listed in several faqs
and I have attempted to send email to the author at an address someone sent
me, but neither the program nor the author are where they used to be. Will
anyone who knows the current whereabouts of either the program or the author
drop me an address via email? Thanks.
